Remember I said we need some kind of sensory play in the house for BB? Yes, we finally act on it and did some colored pasta, in Halloween colors!
BB needed to check that the colors were right. While PK tried filling each bag with the same amount of pasta.
You will need:
- food coloring
- dried pasta (any kind but we used bow pasta because that's PK's favorite)
- rubbing alcohol
- ziploc bags
Steps:
1. Place the pasta in ziploc bag. You need a separate bag of pasta for each color.
2. Cover the pasta with rubbing alcohol. I use enough to cover half the pasta.
3. Mix in food coloring. We used the gel kind but liquid food dye works too.
4. Let your child do some estrous shaking to mix the pasta and color together. It may not seem like the color is enough, but it will be.
5. Let the pasta sit to absorb the color. You may need flip the bags every few hours to get an even shade of color. The longer you leave the pasta in the color dye, the deeper the color will be. We leave ours overnight.
6. Once the pasta are dyed in the color and shade that you desired, drain the liquid away and dry the pasta on aluminum foil. Do not rinse the pasta.
7. Once dry, you can have your child play with it in all sorts of possible ways.
The black turned out really well after three hours, while the other colors need a little more soaking.
Ours are still soaking in color dye. I shall update on what we do with it soon! In the meantime, you can make some colored pasta too!
