There was scheduled power outage at my home today for some transformer maintenance. It was supposed from 8am to 4pm and I thought, it's ok, we are going out for APG play date, I can just stay outside with the kids til it's over then come home.
Everyone was up before 8am and I was still texting my friends in Singapore, then there was no wifi. It's okay UNTIL I realized my car is in the garage and I can't open the garage door!!! Okay, great job, mama, you are locked in. So, I called my APG moms, luckily they didn't mind the dark bathrooms (lit by only a misery scented candle) nor the lack of hot food, they decided to relocate the play date at my place. (And thank goodness my house isn't in it's most extreme state of messy or dirty!)
So Teacher S came in today with many fall activities. There was apple matching of uppercase and lowercase letters. (Sorry, no pics.) And song singing of the seasons. I love it when Teacher S teaches. There is always music. She is the one with the best voice among us and I being totally tone-deaf, could never do a good job at singing with the kids, so I never do.
With the talk of the seasons and falling leaves, the kids proceed to make a fall tree craft.
Things needed:
- bathroom paper roll flattened to give a leaf-shape stamp
- paint
- brush
- paper
- tree trunk cutout on brown paper
And just let the kids stamp n paint it anyway they like.
Then they did a fall leaves jar lantern.
Things needed:
- artificial fall leaves (the ones here are made of fabric, you can probably cut them out using art tissue paper)
- mod podge or white glue with water
- glass jar
- battery operated candle tea light
Apply the leaves on the outside of the glass jar with mod podge and let dry. We spray a layer of mod podge sealer to protect it further. Do this outdoors.
Then it was snack time. The kids were given some food materials to make Halloween snacks. But it didn't turn out the way we want it. They just want to eat. Seriously, those Pinterest pictures never look the same in my kitchen. The mommies gave up and made it for the kids.
This is PK trying to eat the snack. She only ate the marshmallow. Guess apple and peanut butter don't go well on her palate. She would usually eat a lot of fruits.
We had story reading after snack time and the kids read about the different characters who may appear in Halloween - witch, ghost, vampire, mummy, bat... Then they decorate a character each using stickers. How to prevent fighting over a favorite choice? Dice roll!
The kids have fun making their characters anyway.
Then they did a pom pom spider each and painted oil pastel watercolor resist art of spider web.
It was a great class, long enough to tide us through an almost boring locked-in day of no electricity. After the friends went home, PK continue to craft. Guess there is always a need for lots of activities to do at home in case of such indoors days. Thank you to Teacher S for preparing extra crafts for after-class projects.
The power didn't come back at 4pm, we were famished. I needed hot food. And it got so dark after 6pm! We had to get out to eat. When we came back at 8pm, the whole house and neighborhood was pitch dark, I was disappointed and upset. But PK and BB enjoyed the night with flashing torch lights. Sometimes, the kids really teach us to be patient and content. Optimism in every aspect of their life. I hope they never have to stop being optimistic.
The power finally come back at 10pm, which is when I can finally rant about it here with you. Grateful for a safe day without power. I will never forget that the garage door is power-operated again. And PK wishes that there will be not another day without electricity. Guess the kids learn a lot from this eventful day.
