We had an APG play date today and I'm the teacher. Since PK and I have been learning about classification and we did a few animal life cycles, I decided to teach about birds today. I'm surprised that these four year olds know many different birds and they each have their own favorite.
We started with a reading of the book "Max finds an egg" and then made a little bird's nest with disposable bowl, ribbons, fuzzy sticks, feathers. They were then given some eggs to put in the nest. (Good way to get rid of my plastic Easter eggs!)
Then we read "The noisy egg" and the kids learned about mommy duck, daddy drake and baby ducklings. With that, I let the kids crack their eggs and they made a life cycle of a duck using the stickers found in their eggs. The life cycle is done on egg-shaped foam, another good use of my Easter craft stash. We also read "I wish I were a bird".
With the collection of handprint art I did with PK, I gave riddles about different types of birds. They then each made a handprint bird of their choice. PK did a peacock and her friend Pei did a hawk. Isn't it so lovely?
We also listened to the song "Sing a song of Sixpence" and had a mini comprehension quiz. The kids were good and were able to answer my questions like:
What color are the birds?
How many birds in the pie?
For who was the pie for?
What was the King doing in the counting house?
Who was eating bread and honey?
Who was in the garden?
What was the maid doing in the garden?
Where did the bird land on the maid?
And we did a little black bird paper craft above. The one on the left by PK and right by BB.
What an awesome play date today! Love it!
