At APG last week, the kids had a few activities that help them recognize their first and last name, spell them and write them.
We started with squares of "magic papers" which would magically show a special letter when you paint on it. Instead of using watercolors, we used dot-a-dot markers for this activity. It is easy and mess-free.
Most of the kids can spell their names but a few are still struggling with letter recognition especially lower case letters. Some are still learning the last names. Since the letters from the first name and last name were given, the "scrabble" was slightly more difficult. But most of them got it right.
Once the kids are done with revealing their letters, they were asked to assemble them into words that they might possibly know. PK was quick to see that the letter E starts her first name. So, she made her first name relatively easily. With a little help, she could spell the last name too.
After this. we proceed to write valentines for their friends. Signing a valentine is part of gift-giving, so each of them was given nine note cards to sign their names. Since valentines are personal, I have them sign only their first name.
This activity helps them to practice spelling their name and writing it in a small space. Then they practiced cutting by cutting out the note cards and then gluing each one on cardstock paper. A lot of patience involved in this activity but the kids did great! And awesome lesson objectives achieved for the teacher here!
