I saw this frozen sparkly watercolors art and knew that I got to do one of our own too. So, I made these watercolor paints in Halloween colors (orange, green and purple) which happen to be secondary colors too.
There is a lot of color learning in this activity. I used only primary color paint so I can introduce these colors to PK (although she already knows them).
You will need:
- blue, yellow and red water-based paint
- glitter
- cups
- wooden popsicle sticks
- water
- watercolor paper
Steps:
1. Using only two of the primary colors at a time, mix to get orange, green and purple paint in each cup. A good activity to involve the kids so they can see the secondary colors forming in front of them.
2. Add water to fill at least 2inches height. The more water you use, the more dilute the paint will be and the more transparent the color will be during painting. Add more paint to get a deeper color.
3. Add in glitter, mix well. I used white glitter. You can use any color you like but take note not to add too contrasting colors or it might change the color of your paint.
4. Freeze the paint with wooden stick in the cup.
5. Pop the frozen paint out of the cups and let them play.
If your frozen paint is like ours (not thick enough), the stick might not stay long in the ice. But I let PK paint with her hands anyway. Even better, she can feel the coldness!
The ice melted quickly on a cold fall night, I wonder why. So I let PK pour the water paint over her drawing.
But she likes to hold the cold frozen paint block. It's such a good sensory art activity.
When she was done playing, we let the ice paint melt naturally. Water paint was collected on the paper after a while. It is important to use thick watercolor paper so the artwork wouldn't tear.
We let the paint soak and dry overnight.
You can paint on plain watercolor paper but I decided to play a drawing game with PK before we started. Thus, you see all the drawing on the paper.
Lots of spider webs and girls in the drawing. A couple of butterflies and ghost. I like it. She likes drawing.
